In October 2025, a group of children and young people from Ukraine visited Latvia—20 children aged 12 to 17 and five accompanying adults. The visit was organized by the Latvian Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (ALTA), in cooperation with the Ukrainian Association of Incoming Tour Operators (AITO), in response to an initiative of the European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Associations (ECTAA), which since 2024 has brought together tourism industry representatives across Europe with the aim of providing carefree holidays for children affected by war.
The days spent in Latvia were filled with discoveries, warm moments, and new friendships. The program included educational, cultural, and leisure activities in Riga, Sigulda, and Ventspils—from engaging excursions to shared creative workshops and sporting activities.
“This initiative is our way of saying: we see you, we think of you, and we want to give you at least a small ray of light and joy after everything you have been through,” says Ēriks Lingebērziņš, Chairman of the ALTA Board.
ALTA fully covered the costs of transportation, accommodation, meals, and entertainment throughout the trip. The project was made possible with the support of ALTA members, tourism and hospitality companies, and other partners who responded to the call to help with warmth and enthusiasm.
“These children have experienced more than anyone ever should. If we, as tourism professionals, can give them a few days of peace, safety, and joy, then this is the most important journey we can organize,” emphasizes ALTA Secretary General Irēna Riekstiņa.
The visit of Ukrainian children to Latvia is a testament to humanity and solidarity, showing that tourism is not only about travel, but also about building bridges between people and countries—with the power to restore hope and resilience.
